MORNING PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM CURRICULUM

The Once Upon a Time Pre-K Program uses both child and teacher directed play activities to prepare children for kindergarten. The teacher will guide the children in the basic social and academic skills. Children will have the opportunity to explore in a play-based environment at his/her own pace.

Learning experiences will include language arts, literature, early math concepts, creative art projects, dramatic play, and gross and fine motor activities.

Literature

Children will explore a variety of quality literature through picture books, poetry, informational books, concept books, fiction and non-fiction. Children will become familiar with the physical parts of a book as well as learning there’s a beginning, middle, and end to books.

Language Arts

Each child will b e encouraged to work in a journal showing his/her progression of learning.
Language development concepts explored may include:

  • Colors
  • Simple word recognition
  • Recognizing first names
  • Sight words/Word banks
  • Picture sorts
  • Child and group written stories

Mathematics

Our philosophy of play carries over into early learning math concepts. Through a variety of manipulative objects children will learn in a concrete manner. Manipulatives available may include unfix cubes, pattern blocks, geo boards, and a variety of everyday objects such as keys, q-tips, toothpicks etc. Math experiences may happen in a spontaneous manner or take place during small and large group time. Our math experiences will include:

  • Sorting
  • Counting
  • Graphing
  • Patterning
  • Classifying
  • Number recognition
  • Shape recognition

Creative Art Experience

Children will have a variety of art materials to create open- ended art. These open-ended art experiences let the child express him/herself in an honest way! An emphasis is placed on process rather than product. Some of the art experiences may include small group or large group creations. Materials available include:

  • Paint (tempera and watercolor)/brushes
  • Glue
  • Crayons, markers, and colored pencils
  • Pastels and colored chalk
  • Scissors
  • Yarn
  • Stamps and ink pads
  • Many recyclables!
  • Clay and play doh
  • Variety of paper

Dramatic Play

In our dramatic play area the children will learn more about themselves and others through creative expression.

  • Skits
  • Cooperation and sharing
  • Role playing
  • Dress up

Science

Children learn basic science concepts through observation, predicting, and discovery through a variety of science activities such as:

  • Hands-on experiments
  • Classroom experiments
  • Collecting and graphing data
  • Seasonal nature activities

Physical Activities

Activities indoor and outdoor offer fine and large motor development.

  • Throwing. Catching, running
  • Swinging
  • Playing cooperative games
  • Playing in the sandbox
  • Climbing on the play equipment
  • Obstacle courses
  • Dancing
  • Yoga

Music

During our time together the children will have an opportunity to participate in music experiences.

  • Singing songs

  • Interpretive movement and dance
  • Creating art while listening to a variety of music
